Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Calibration
If your Subaru has features such as pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, or lane keep assist, then your vehicle has what is called ADAS technology (also called EyeSight Driver Assist technology). These safety features are operated through cameras mounted on your Subaru’s windshield and thus will need to be re-aligned and calibrated after a replacement.
What is Subaru EyeSight Technology?
Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist features include:
- Pre-Collision Braking (Automatic Emergency Braking): Warns the driver of a potential frontal crash and applies brakes automatically if the driver doesn’t react.
- Pre-Collision Throttle Management: Cuts engine power if the driver accidentally accelerates toward an obstacle.
- Adaptive Cruise Control: Maintains set speed and following distance. Works in stop-and-go traffic.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Alerts the driver if the car begins to drift out of its lane without signaling.
- Lane Keep Assist (LKA): Provides gentle steering input to help keep the vehicle centered.
- Lane Centering (Enhanced Adaptive Cruise): Works with Adaptive Cruise Control to keep the car centered within its lane.
- Lead Vehicle Start Alert: Alerts the driver if traffic ahead starts moving but the Subaru doesn’t.
- Emergency Automatic Steering (newer EyeSight versions): Assists in steering to avoid collisions if braking alone won’t prevent one.
- Other Safety Tie-ins: Subaru integrates EyeSight with features like Blind-Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Reverse Automatic Braking, but those use radar sensors in the rear bumper, not the windshield cameras.
How Does Subaru Windshield Calibration Work?
There are two types of ADAS calibration: static and dynamic. Static calibration requires a completely level surface and a set of specialized targets to calibrate the cameras mounted to your windshield. Dynamic calibration involves driving your vehicle to expose it to traffic, road markings, and signs. Most Subaru features only require static calibration, but dynamic calibration is sometimes performed as well.
